Treatment Programs

Evidence-based programs tailored to your unique recovery needs

Medical Detox

Detox at NTH begins with the understanding that withdrawal is not just a medical event — it reverberates through the whole body. Over three to seven days of continuous clinical monitoring, our San Francisco team pairs evidence-based medication management with acupuncture, breathwork, and guided somatic awareness to ease the nervous system through each stage of withdrawal. Every protocol is individualized based on the substance involved, your physical health, and any co-occurring emotional or psychiatric needs.

Our creative-arts model begins at day one of detox — not as a replacement for medical care, but alongside it. Quiet music hours, a journal at the bedside, and gentle movement support the nervous system regulation withdrawal demands.

What's included: 24/7 nursing, physician-managed medication, psychiatric consult within 48 hours, MAT when clinically indicated, acupuncture suite access for comfort care, and daily family updates.

Residential Treatment

A 30 to 90 day stay in our 45-bed Noe Valley residence. The daily rhythm balances clinical depth (individual therapy, group work, family sessions) with the creative-arts focus that defines NTH — daily studio time in the art room, music therapy, and guided movement.

Family restoration is not a track running in parallel to residential care — it is the organizing outcome. Weekly family therapy, biweekly multi-family workshops, and a structured reconnection plan begin in week one and continue post-discharge.

What's included: private and shared rooms, chef-prepared farm-to-table meals, art therapy studio, music room, community garden, acupuncture suite, library, and a 90-day family check-in cadence after discharge.

Outpatient Program

Three outpatient tracks for Bay Area residents who need to keep working, parenting, studying, or caregiving while in active treatment.

PHP runs 5 days per week, 6 hours per day, for 2–4 weeks. IOP runs 3 evenings per week for 8–12 weeks — built for working adults across San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, and the Peninsula. Standard outpatient continues weekly therapy and medication management for 3–6 months after step-down.

The creative-arts and family-restoration threads continue through every outpatient level. Step-down between levels is clinical, not calendar-based.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

More than 60% of patients arriving at NTH have a co-occurring psychiatric condition — depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, bipolar disorder — driving or amplifying their substance use. Missed dual diagnosis is the single most common pattern we see in patients who return from other programs.

Our dual diagnosis track keeps psychiatric medication management and substance use therapy under one coordinated team. Dr. Halberg-Wu reviews every plan; the same psychiatrist who prescribes attends the family meeting.

Approach: integrated assessment in week one, single coordinated plan, neurofeedback as adjunctive therapy, creative-arts integration alongside talk therapy, and a discharge plan with named local psychiatric providers who continue the work.
